Samrawit Hagos — 1st Place Winner, 2022
The Ethiopian High School Research Challenge is a nationwide platform that brings together exceptional high school students from across Ethiopia to explore, innovate, and address real-world scientific and social challenges. Participants progress through regional selections, semifinal evaluations, and a national final judged by experts and institutions, including the Ethiopian Information and Network Security Agency (INSA).
In the 2022 competition, Samrawit Hagos earned 1st Place for her project titled “Microbial Community Dynamics and Ecosystem Resilience in Ethiopian Highland Soils.” Her research focused on how soil microbiomes influence plant-soil interactions and ecosystem health when faced with climate stressors.
Samrawit’s project impressed judges for its scientific rigour, field-lab integration, and relevance to Ethiopia’s ecological sustainability goals. Her work embodies the competition’s mission—to empower students to apply scientific research in ways that advance Ethiopia’s natural and technological development.
The Ethiopian High School Research Challenge continues to support young innovators through mentorship, recognition, and opportunities to transform research into impactful real-world solutions.
